Bonita (Euthynnus alletteratus)
AKA: little tunny, little tuna, footballs, false albacore, bonito, bonehead
Bonitos are a tribe of medium-sized, ray-finned predatory fish in the family Scombridae – a family it shares with the mackerel, tuna, and Spanish mackerel. The bonita is a strong swimmer, with very dark, bloody flesh. Bonita normally travel in fairly large schools and are common offshore. Crabs, grunts, snappers, groupers, huge tarpon and huge barracudas will devour that bonita you have for shark bait.
USES: A favorite among shark fishermen, bonita is an extremely tough, bloody fish with dark meat. Can be chunked, stripped – great bottom bait. May also be cut into strips for a great trolling bait.
